SEARS

Student Expenses and Resources Survey

The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) continues to utilize data to better understand the total cost of attendance for California’s students by conducting the Student Expenses and Resources Survey (SEARS). CSAC surveys thousands of students, from both public and private colleges, to understand how students perceive costs of higher education and resources available to them.

We know that college affordability is a national crisis. Last week, CSAC released the 2024–25 Student Expenses and Resources Survey (SEARS) Report, offering a look at the financial challenges college students face across the state. SEARS represents a survey of thousands of students from across California’s public and private colleges and universities.

The 2024-25 SEARS Report offers important insights into student spending and unmet needs. The Report also includes student stories to put voice to the lived experiences behind the data.

CSAC uses the information collected on SEARS to create a statewide Student Expense Budget that includes the rising cost of living. The Student Expense Budget is then used by colleges to determine students’ financial aid eligibility.

The cost of attending college – including housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses – continues to rise faster than most students’ ability to keep up. This is particularly true for BIPOC students, student parents, and adult learners.

Every three years, CSAC surveys students to track the rising cost of college and cost of living. The results of the survey are summarized in our Student Expenses and Resources Survey (SEARS) Report. Last week, we released the 2024-25 Report which shows alarming statistics about financial stability for students enrolled in higher education.
